Homestays as Engines
Local Empowerment
Building Sustainable Futures
Challenge
Within the remote rural landscapes of India, that is ripe for sustainable tourism development, local communities seldom find themselves marginalized and economically excluded. Despite an influx of visitors, the economic advantages hardly reach the grassroots level, impeding the comprehensive progress of these communities. This economic disparity not only hampers the local population’s growth but also poses a threat to preserving their distinctive cultural heritage.
In the realm of climate change, numerous undiscovered locales across India face a paradoxical situation, where the potential for eco-friendly tourism remains largely untapped. Local communities in these areas inadvertently safeguard hidden gems – undiscovered reservoirs of natural beauty, cultural richness, and historical significance.
The absence of strategic support and promotion in these untouched regions denies locals the opportunity to harness climate-conscious tourism as a catalyst for sustainable economic growth and cultural empowerment. This, in turn, hinders both local and national climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts.
“Recognizing and addressing the challenges tourism is crucial for creating a more climate-resilient, equitable, and diverse tourism landscape in India.”
The Solution
In response to the challenges faced by rural communities, GHE took proactive steps by launching its rural tourism program in 2017, marked by the establishment of Mountain Homestays. This initiative was designed to create a local ecosystem of tourism destinations, with a specific focus on empowering local communities and advocating for the principles of a circular economy. The primary objective of this program goes beyond merely introducing culturally enriching rural tourism to existing visitors in the region. It seeks to emphasize and showcase the sustainable lifestyles adopted by these communities.
As part of this initiative, GHE blends traditional approaches with cutting-edge technologies, ensuring that the overall traveler experience is not only culturally immersive but also environmentally responsible. The commitment to making the traveler experience “Climate Positive” reflects GHE’s dedication to minimizing the ecological impact of tourism activities.

Sustainability
In the quest for sustainability, extending beyond the initial establishment of homestays, actively fostering market connections for homestay owners becomes a pivotal element of the process. The implementation of a feedback and review system from travelers is equally indispensable to consistently enhance the homestay and hospitality experience. This approach facilitates continuous improvement and regular retraining of homestay owners as necessary.
To further enhance the homestay experience for travelers and create additional revenue streams for homestay owners, GHE concentrates on initiatives that add value to tourism. This involves promoting local handicrafts, specifically Cashmere wool products, and integrating nature-based experiences such as stargazing as integral elements of the homestay experience.

Scalability
This transformative initiative, focused on the establishment of eco-friendly homestays, the empowerment of women entrepreneurs, the promotion of rural tourism, the stimulation of local economies and job creation, and the integration of solar initiatives, is crafted for extensive scalability and impact. Our standardized model guarantees replicability across diverse communities, with community engagement and ownership ingrained to foster a crucial sense of local commitment for program sustainability.

Through strategic partnerships with private enterprises, NGOs, and government agencies, we aim to leverage additional resources, expertise, and funding to maximize impact. Our incorporation of technology streamlines processes, ensuring the efficient management and scalability of the homestays. Emphasizing inclusive growth, education, and market linkages, we strive to ensure that the benefits reach all segments of the community, cultivating widespread support.
Target Population, Vision
The overarching objective is to establish a network of 300 carbon-neutral homestays within the remote and pristine regions of India over the next three years, fostering the growth of sustainable tourism practices. This endeavor will be enhanced by providing skill development and training to communities, focusing on sustainable tourism practices and creating livelihood opportunities through homestay-based tourism.
The Sustainable Destination Approach
The aspiration is to develop sustainable destinations supported by clean energy and environmentally friendly amenities, fostering responsible tourism and empowering communities in a comprehensive manner.

Modus Operandi
To establish Eco Homestays, GHE adheres to a specific operating procedure. The actions we take include:
- Identifying the region based on the current influx of travelers.
- Identifying village communities and entrepreneurs interested in operating a homestay.
- Conducting a baseline analysis of the identified family set to run the homestay, along with an assessment of the overall carbon footprint of household operations.
- Determining the materials and interiors to be installed at the homestay.
- Custom-manufacturing and procuring homestay materials according to GHE’s specific criteria, considering local cultural aspects.
- Investing in upgrading the homestay with various carbon-neutral elements such as solar grids, solar water heaters, water filters, beds, crockery, bedding, curtains, carpets, chairs, dustbins, and other essential items
- Designing and selecting clean technological solutions to be implemented at the homestay.
- Transporting the materials to the homestays and setting up the homestay in collaboration with the homestay owner.
- Providing training to homestay owners by expert trainers in hospitality skills and guest services to ensure a positive guest experience.
- Establishing online and offline market linkage for homestays by listing them on booking platforms and promoting them on social media.
- Creating marketing collaterals for homestay promotion, targeting specific audiences.
- Connecting homestay operations to GHE’s support team, which will initially handle inquiries from travelers looking to book these homestays.
The Sustainable Destination Approach
Impact
3000
Travelers Served Annually Across 35 Homestays
Establishing community or family-run homestays empowers local residents by providing them with additional income opportunities beyond agriculture and farming, enabling them to share their destination’s story in its truest form with global travelers. With digital support and direct market linkages, these homestays allow visitors to experience the authentic culture and traditions of a place, such as enjoying a cup of Solja with a Ladakhi family in their khampa. Homestays not only preserve cultural heritage for future generations but also promote holistic development by balancing tourism’s impact on natural resources and the environment.
While homestays may lack the luxury of hotels, they offer an enriching experience that supports local communities and fosters a deeper connection with the destination. When managed well, tourism through homestays can help sustain natural habitats, preserve cultural heritage, and contribute positively to the local economy.
