Astro Setup and Training Report (Maharashtra)

GHE Annual Report 2025

The Astro Setup and Training Program in Murshet Village, Maharashtra, is a simple yet powerful example of how new ideas can transform rural tourism. Conducted from 12th to 15th January 2026, the program introduced astronomy-based tourism as a stable and skill-based source of income for local communities.

Murshet, located in the beautiful Bhandardara region, is known for trekking, camping and nature experiences. However, these activities are seasonal and depend on weather conditions. This often leads to irregular income for local guides and homestay owners. The astro tourism initiative addresses this challenge by adding a year-round experience, stargazing. With its clear night skies and low light pollution, Murshet offers ideal conditions for this unique activity.

The program focused on building local skills. Six young participants from the village were trained in basic astronomy, telescope handling and tourist engagement. They learned how to identify stars, planets and constellations and how to share these stories in a simple and engaging way with visitors. A 10-inch Dobsonian telescope was installed, along with proper training on its use, care and safety .

What makes astro tourism special is that it is inclusive and sustainable. It does not require heavy physical effort but focuses on knowledge and communication. It also adds a meaningful night-time experience, encouraging tourists to stay longer and connect more deeply with the destination.

The long-term impact of this initiative is promising. As highlighted in the report, local incomes are expected to grow steadily over time, making astro tourism a reliable and scalable livelihood option. It not only strengthens the village economy but also gives Murshet a unique identity as a stargazing destination .
