A Landmark for Meghalaya
Tura’s first skatepark empowers youth, blends sport with creativity, and sparks a cultural movement in Meghalaya.
A new era for adventure sports in the region
In a powerful statement of commitment to youth empowerment and sports innovation, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma inaugurated the groundbreaking of Meghalaya’s first-ever skatepark in Tura. This landmark moment marks the beginning of a visionary project designed to energize the region’s youth culture, promote physical activity and offer a creative outlet for expression. The project is being developed through CSR initiative of Decathlon and implemented by GHE and OneStage.
Groundbreaking Ceremony: Where Vision Met Action
The ceremonial groundbreaking, held at the skatepark construction site, was led by CM Conrad Sangma and joined by local community leaders, educators and enthusiastic youth from the region. The event signaled more than just the start of construction—it was a symbolic nod to a future where Tura becomes a hub for alternative sports and inclusive public spaces.
Addressing the crowd, the Chief Minister emphasized the government’s intent to create meaningful opportunities for the youth. “This skatepark is not just about sports; it’s about building confidence, community and new careers,” he said.
The Tura skatepark is designed to meet international standards while remaining deeply rooted in local aspiration. The design and construction process reflects precision, inclusivity and innovation.
Phase 1: Site Analysis & Design Process
• Topographic Mapping: High-resolution maps were created using drone imagery and on-ground surveying tools. These informed the drainage layout, slope planning and structural design.
• 3D Visualisation & Blueprinting: Concepts were developed using AutoCAD, incorporating real-time feedback from young skaters, sports officials and the local college community.
Design Features
o Skate Elements: Skate bowls, grind rails, ramps, quarter pipes
o Community Spaces: Seating for spectators, a youth graffiti wall
o Safety Measures: Signage, fencing and regulated access to ensure a safe and secure environment for all
1. Site Preparation & Landscaping
• A 1.5-foot brick boundary marked the construction zone.
• Debris removal and ground levelling prepared the area for foundational work.
2. Rockbed Soiling
• Excavated to a depth of 1 to 1.5 inches using mechanical excavators.
• Filled with a composite mix of stone chips, broken bricks and sand, manually and mechanically levelled for optimal strength and drainage.
3. PCC Layer (Plain Cement Concrete)
• A 4-inch (100mm) thick layer of PCC was laid over the rockbed base.
• Ensured a stable and even surface, protecting upper layers from soil contact and moisture.
4. Rod Binding for RCC
• 8mm steel rods were uniformly tied in a grid pattern with binding wire.
• This reinforced steel mesh forms the structural base for the RCC slab, adding tensile strength and durability to the park.
Beyond bricks and rails, this skatepark represents freedom, resilience and the voice of a generation. It is a space where local talent can thrive, where art and sport collide and where community-building takes center stage.
With the groundwork now laid, both literally and symbolically, Tura is set to roll confidently into a new chapter of youth-led development.
